Foliar Fungicide Applications for Corn

Situation:
Recent studies have shown potential economic benefits for foliar fungicide applications on corn. These treatments can give protective or curative benefits for corn diseases such as: Grey Leaf Spot, Eye Spot, Common Rust, and Anthracnose. These diseases can limit photosynthesis due to tissue death. This loss of leaf tissue may result in grain production loss or weaken stalk strength and cause harvest losses due to harvestability concerns. These diseases are most prevalent under warm and moist conditions that we normally experience from July – September.
Factors to Consider:
1. Hybrid planted – plant health ratings, stay green, and stalk strength
2. Disease pressure present in the field
3. Current condition and yield potential of the crop
4. Current weather conditions
5. Harvest timing for particular fields
Action Plan:
1. Review planting records and field maps to determine hybrids / fields that would have the greatest benefits
2. Determine harvest schedules:
• Which fields may be harvested later for drying, storage, etc
3. Scout fields and determine disease pressures present
4. Consult your local crop protection advisor to discuss the best product option for the specific field situation (Table 1)
5. Schedule timing applications for the best product performance and crop safety.

Summary
Foliar fungicide applications to corn can provide economic benefit. This benefit can be variable based on: hybrid, timing, disease pressure, and weather conditions. Consult your local crop protection retailer to discuss timing, economics, product choices, and benefits.
